The Peace Gardens |
With the
Sheffield University Students’ Union being closed for building works during our
first week, our lessons were spent in a variety
of Starbucks cafes
but, at the weekend, we took the opportunity to explore some of Sheffield’s
attractions.
Seating on The Moor |
Living on the
edge of Sheffield for 6 months, with her boyfriend Raul and two dogs, Irene knew the Peak District National Park but had not spent much time in the city.
In easy walking distance of each other, the Peace Gardens, the
Millennium Gallery, the Winter Gardens, Tudor Square and Sheaf Square all
provide outstanding examples of modern urban landscaping, with fountains and
public art, which have transformed the city centre.
Sheffield City Museum |
At Sheffield City Museum, and then taking
advantage of the Starbucks directly opposite, we revised much of the vocabulary
that had been taught during the previous week by looking at and discussing a
wide variety of displays and objects.
Having an interest in cooking herself, Irene also appreciated our visit to Sheffield Market where, apart from seeing the products on display, she could listen to language that is peculiar to its market traders.

At the Tai Sun oriental supermarket too, she was also particularly interested in the fish, fruit, vegetables and the various other exotic ingredients that can be purchased there.
